First Practical Work Experience

In addition to providing our students with individual counselling as well as organising various informative events, it is important to us to give the our pupils the chance to gain practical work experience.

The German School Nairobi thus maintains close contacts with various local companies. We also depend on parental co-operation, especially concerning the Taster Work Experience Day in Classes 5 and 6.

In case you are able to avail a work placement to our students, please contact our Head of Career Counselling.

Practical Training Class 9

2 weeks in May

So that our students get an early insight into the working and economic world, all students in Class 9 carry out a practical training programme. This gives the students an opportunity to get to know a specific career and its operational procedures.

The programme is part of the subject German, and students are responsible for getting the placements themselves.

Social Studies Lessons in Class 10

Over the academic year

We would like to encourage our students to engage in social activities, take on social responsibility, and gain experience outside of their academic lessons. The students are thus obliged to do at least 10 hours (10 -20 hours normally) of Community Service, which they will complete in their free time over the academic year. They receive a certification at the end of the year upon successful completion.

Economic Field Research in Class 11

1 week in October (currently)

The Economic Field research programme carried out in Class 11 gives students an insight into the operation of larger companies, and helps them to complement their basic theoretical knowledge (covered in Geography lessons) through practical experience. Such work experience also provides a clear impulse towards the professional orientation.

This programme is covered in Geography lessons.

career encounter evening

One evening in March, April or May

Classes 8 to 12 get in touch with experienced professionals, usually parents of the schoolchildren

Taster Work Experience Day

1 day in May (dependant on date of Oral Abitur Examination)

Students from Classes 5 - 10 are given the opportunity to gain some knowledge about a typical working day. Students in Classes 5 and 6 thus accompany parents or relatives to work. Classes 7 and 8 visit a company, with the aim of getting an insight into the structure of a company, as well the various jobs carried out in the company. Class 9 is normally on its Practical Training at this time, and students in Class 10 go to the German Embassy.
