DAAD - Study in Germany

Date 15/05/2017

The students of class 9-12 and some interested parents attended the information evening about studying in Germany on Thursday, 23.02.2017. The presentation was held by 3 DAAD representatives, 2 who work in Kenya and 1 who was visiting from Germany and Mrs. Koppel, who works at the visa department in the German Embassy.

The main goal of this presentation was to give elaborate information to the parents and students about getting higher education in Germany. The presentation illustrated the university system, informed about possible study costs and advised on how to find a suitable university or college on online portals.

We found out that a completing a bachelor’s degree takes about 3-4 years and if one would wish to also attain a master’s degree it would take an additional 1-2 years. The DAAD representatives also recommended that the students apply for universities immediately after receiving their Abitur certificates and also start searching for accommodation as soon as possible. This is only one of the very helpful advice they gave. There also quite a number of questions from the audience.

The second goal of the information evening was to enlighten the non-German students along with their parents on the right way to apply for a German study visa. Mrs. Koppel answered the audience’s questions as well as gave facts, advice and information on how to attain the study visa.

An interesting fact, for example, was that one would need around 8600€ in a blocked bank account for the first year of university. Both the parents and students were very thankful for the substantial information and advice given.
