The Cafeteria at the German School Nairobi

cafeteria

Good food at school doesn’t just contribute to children being fit enough for the school day, it shapes their food culture, their appreciation of food and their nutritional behaviour. Balanced and healthy meals are of great significance for the development and capabilities of children and young people. For this reason, the German School Nairobi works with a physiological diet concept, which offers not just healthy and freshly prepared meals, but also provides education in the lunch break. Here, the German School draws up a reduced meat menu with lots of vegetables and a balance of carbohydrates and proteins. A large proportion of the raw ingredients used by the German School are from local producers. Fruit and vegetables especially, but also grains, meat and fish, wherever possible, come from sustainable ecological production. The school also farms its own garden, using the harvest in the school kitchen.

Since the kitchen and canteen of the Geman School Nairobi was rebuilt in 2020, the kitchen staff have worked to the modern European standard and with the highest hygienic requirements to guarantee maximum product safety. The supply to the kitchen and canteen has also been more sustainable since the rebuild. We get our power from a photovoltaic system, which covers one hundred percent of the power demand in good weather. The water comes from our own well and is reprocessed after use and used to irrigate the sports facilities.

AHK Dual vocational Training

AHK Dual vocational Training

Dual education is a programme, which combines theory and practice so that the trainees don’t just acquire theoretical knowledge at the end of their training, but also practical experience in their profession.

The AHK Kenya training programme has been adapted to the German framework teaching plan for chefs and the hotel trade and is thus recognised by the Kenyan government as well as by Germany as a professional diploma.

The programme was started in Kenya by the Delegation of German Economics (AHK) in partnership with the German School Nairobi and some hotels with the goal of offering young adults high quality training. They should be qualified enough to quickly enter the job market because companies are prepared to employ them after receiving their diploma. This should lower the unemployment rate in Kenya.

Since the start of 2019, the German School Nairobi has been part of the training programme. The theoretical lessons take place at Kibondeni College in Westlands, Nairobi, under various tutors, the practical lessons are taught by the kitchen managers at the German School Nairobi.

Although the German school association is not a hotel or a restaurant, we have decided to participate in the programme to extend our educational remit in this way and to offer a vocational education option, especially for young Kenyans in additon to the academic education.

Health Centre

The health centre of the GSN

There is a first aid room at the German School Nairobi, where there is always a school nurse during school times, who is there for your children.

During the school day, a child can always suddenly feel ill or injure themselves while playing or running around. In this case, you can rest assured that we will immediately take adequate care of your child.

Healthy children learn better!

Our school is not just a place of learning, but also a place of living, where health prevention begins. How does my diet relate to my wellbeing? Why is it so important to move enough and what does my sleep have to do with my health? We explore all these exciting questions with your children in various projects to keep your child healthy.

A warm welcome and wishing you well,

COVID 19 Information
COVID 19 Information

On this page you will find all information about COVID 19 at the German School Nairobi.

This document is constantly revised based on the development and new information about the infection with the new coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2).

If you have any questions, please contact our infirmary: nurse@germanschool.co.ke

The German School Nairobi does not assume any liability for external links as well as their content. It is the responsibility of each individual to ensure that he/she is informed about the current situation and to keep an eye on the rapidly changing conditions for the respective private travel destination (and return).

Basic infectious disease epidemiological assumptions and observations on schools.
  • Students are in principle susceptible to infection with SARS-CoV-2 and can infect others

  • However, children and younger adolescents are less likely to be affected and are not drivers of infection

  • After the teenage years, adolescents are similarly susceptible and infectious as adults

  • Children and adolescents often show no or mild symptoms; severe courses are rare

  • Outbreaks in schools are increasingly observed, but so far can be well controlled

  • The recognized infection control measures are also effective in children and adolescents and are an important component in coping with the pandemic

  • Main transmission is respiratory ingestion of virus-containing particles ( droplets and aerosols) in the close environment ( less than 1.5 - 2 meters) of infectious persons or under unfavorable conditions with increased particle emission such as during singing/shouting, closed rooms or insufficient fresh air supply

  • How are the rules defined?

The defined corona measures at the German School are coordinated by a committee consisting of the management levels and the health team in consultation with physicians and the overall parent representatives. The basis is formed by the currently valid guidelines of the Kenyan government and the recommendations of the Robert Koch Institute, based on current scientific evidence.

What Corona measures are in place at the GSN?
  • AHA Rules: Keep distance, including during breaks and on the way to and from school/transportation Follow hygiene rules, cough/sneeze etiquette and hand hygiene, wear everyday masks except for eating/drinking and sports

  • No greeting rituals with physical contact

  • Fixed group assignment/grade levels without mixing

  • Time and space concepts for breaks and lunches

  • Path concepts, one-way systems

  • depending on infection, alternation of presence/distance teaching, hybrid system

  • Suspension of class trips, school parties and other nonessential school activities

  • Prohibition of access to school grounds for persons with no specific connection to school

  • Open doors and windows in classrooms

  • Temperature checks at school entrance, before entering school buses

  • Wash stations before entering school grounds

  • Persons with symptoms suggestive of Covid 19 disease or Group 1 contacts to suspected or positively tested persons are not allowed to enter school grounds

  • consistent implementation of isolation and quarantine

  • Move school activities, such as sports, outdoors if possible

  • No choral singing or playing of wind instruments in unsuitable indoor spaces

  • Creation of additional classrooms to equalize large class sizes

  • Goals of the corona measures
  • Resumption/maintenance of regular and reliable attendance classes.

  • Avoidance of complete school closures

  • Protecting all students and staff from infection, including at-risk groups

  • Prevent uncontrolled spread of infection, ensure rapid case finding, traceability of infection chains

  • Consistent implementation of isolation and quarantine

  • Strengthening the confidence of the student body, parents and staff in a safe school environment

  • Traceability of procedures through clear communication

  • What happens if a student tests positive for Covid 19?

The affected student must immediately go into home isolation for at least 10 days after the test date and until symptom-free. Readmission to school must be certified by a doctor's note.
    .
Family members such as parents and siblings are to be quarantined for 14 days, this is not lifted even with the presence of a negative Covid 19 test. During this time, entry onto school grounds is prohibited.
Starting from the test date, all contacts of the previous 2 days that have taken place in the school setting are traced back. Here, it is particularly important to assign the detected contacts to category 1 or 2 contacts:

Category 1 higher risk of infection:

Person with ≥15 min of face-to-face contact
Prolonged exposure (eg, 30 min) in room with high concentration of infectious aerosols
    Direct contact with secretions

Contact category I ▶ Domestic quarantine for 14 days.

Category 2 lower risk of infection:

    Persons < 15 min face-to-face contact (cumulative.)
No prolonged exposure (e.g., less than 30 min) in room with high concentration of infectious aerosols.
Contact ≤ 1.5 m with both source case and contact person wearing correct MNS or MNB throughout.

Contact person category II ▶ Reduction in contact with others for 14 days.

Based on the categories, it is determined which contact persons must also go into quarantine. For the school sector, the Corona Response Team will do this contact tracing in detail and of course inform the relevant parents of the necessary steps. According to Kenyan guidelines, the relevant health department for our school, which conducted the school review in October, must be informed of any positive cases.

What happens if a family member of a student tests positive?

In this case, a category 1 contact is usually assumed (see "What happens if a student tests positive for Covid 19?") and thus the student in question, like siblings, must be quarantined for 14 days. If the student has no suspicious symptoms, classmates may continue to attend school. Parents will receive general information here and will be notified if there are any changes.

What happens when a suspected case occurs at school?

If symptoms suggesting Covid 19 illness occur during the school day, the affected student will be escorted to the isolation room and cared for by the nurse until picked up by parents. Parents should please pick up their children as soon as possible within one hour max. Individuals with cold symptoms may basically have SARS-CoV-2 and we strongly recommend testing. Please keep the school informed of further progress.

When should a child not attend school?

Children are often sick because the immune system, especially at a younger age, deals with all kinds of pathogens and this is also important to build up a certain immunity. In times of Corona, this presents us with particular challenges, as children in particular often show few symptoms. For this reason, it is unfortunately not possible for children to attend school, even with only mild cold symptoms. To help you differentiate, we have attached a flow chart that will help you see when your child needs to stay home and for how long. Please also consider, if you are ill with a cold, to keep your children at home until clarification.

Whom do you, as parents, have to inform about suspected cases/illnesses?

Everyone can contract Covid 19! As a school, it is especially important for us not to allow any stigmatization and to always educate about the infection routes and disease.
If there is a suspected case or case of illness in your family, it is imperative to inform the school about it via the CORONA RESPONSE TEAM consisting of the school and kindergarten management, the 3 medical staff members, Mrs. Sharma as HR as well as the overall parent representative Mrs. Dr. Berit Lattorff via email to responseteam@germanschool.co.ke.

How do we measure temperature at school?

To measure body temperature, we measure on the so-called body trunk, i.e. on the forehead, temple or neck. The extremities do not give an exact temperature, especially in children, because in fever just these are often rather cool. Think once on which body regions you feel with your children, if you suspect fever.
Our guards are trained regularly, how the temperature measurement is to be made and what is to be done with temperatures starting from 38°C:

  • The person in question is asked to remove warm clothing such as scarves and leave the car in an assigned parking area near the guards. After 10 minutes, the measurement is repeated. If the body temperature is elevated again, the nurse is called in to discuss further action.
  • Out of school hours, when no nurse is present, it is requested that if the temperature is above 38°C, even the 2nd measurement again to leave the school premises and thus follow the Covid policy.
  • Our thermoguns are numbered and checked regularly. Depending on the temperatures inside the car and outside, sometimes the measurement results may be incorrect. If you experience repeated problems with the measurement, please send an email with more information about this to nurse@germanschool.co.ke.

    Pool

    The GSN Pool

Our heated 25-metre swimming pool with 4 lanes gives the students and members of the school association the opportunity to enjoy the water all year round, even in the cold months. From January to April, the students have swimming lessons during their normal PE lessons. Some students take part in the swimming clubs, which are offered all year round in the afternoons, while some students go further than that and join the swim team, which trains even more intensely with the swimming trainers.

The DSN pool is a teaching space, a training location for our students, a meeting point for families and a venue for birthdays, as the swimming pool is also open to members of the school association (parents) on weekends and when it is not being used for PE lessons or clubs. A school highlight is the swimming festival at the end of February/beginning of March.

For several years, the DSN has had the honour of hosting the Potsdam swimming team, who use our pool as an altitude training camp.

    Facilities

    Play and sports facilities

Sports are a priority at our school. The school campus offers numerous indoor and outdoor sports facilities, which are actively used during sports lessons in the morning and during leisure activities in the afternoon.
Groups of students can always be found on the soccer field, in the 25-meter swimming pool, in the gymnasium (with sprung floor), on the beach volleyball court, and on our tennis courts.
Our sports facilities can be used by both members and non-members of the German School Association, such as guests, friends or those interested in what the German School Nairobi has to offer.

    FacilityDescription
Tennis courtThe German School Nairobi has two clay courts on the school grounds, which can be used all year round. Both beginners and advanced players can take lessons from our experienced coaches at their own expense. The courts are constantly kept in good condition by John and Ken. The courts are open to all members of the school and operate on a membership system for adults. Pupils play for free. The tennis club is a friendly community of families and individual players and welcomes new children and adults. Contact: tennis@germanschool.co.ke
Beach volleyball courtAnyone who wants to play beach volleyball is welcome at the DSN. There is a persistent rumor that we have the only beach volleyball court in Nairobi. This would mean that you can play on the best beach volleyball court in Nairobi. If you would like to join us, please contact Christian Vorein: christian.vorein@germanschool.co.ke
Football pitchThe centerpiece of our athletics field is the soccer field. In 2019, the turf has been extensively renovated and an irrigation system installed. The turf field is not only used for school sports, but also by the German Soccer Football Club and recreational athletes (parents, staff) on a regular basis. christian.vorein@germanschool.co.ke
Basketball courtFramed by the cafeteria and nursery is our basketball court. School lessons, clubs and competitions take place here. Recreational teams can also play here. Even Dirk Nowitzki competed in the shooting contest... and won, of course.
Sports hallOur sports hall was extensively renovated in 2020. Since then, new lighting has illuminated the newly renovated wooden sprung floor. In addition to regular sports lessons and school clubs, volleyball players (parents, staff) and badminton players meet in their free time. Playground

At school, not only does learning take place in the classroom, but there must also be enough time to exercise in the fresh air. Is there anything better for children than a playground with as many different and inviting playground equipment as possible?

There are four different playgrounds for different age groups on the school grounds.

When you enter the school through the main gate, you immediately see the large playground for the primary school children on your left. The children enjoy a climbing frame, swings, a sandbox or a net swing during their breaks. The absolute highlight is a merry-go-round that hardly ever stands still during the seasons. Many an adult's heart almost stops when you see the courage and speed with which the students go around in circles. Some families also like to use the playground on weekends or stay longer after school to play. Benches to sit on also invite parents to linger.

There are three other playgrounds for the little ones in our community, for the kindergarten children. In a rotation principle, the groups take turns on the different playgrounds. There is a playground right by the main building with a large tree in the middle that provides shade. Here you can ride hippos, balance on a log, play in the sand, spin on a jungle gym and much more.

The second playground is not far from the group rooms. A rope attached to the large tree is just as fun as the play hut with a slide or the swings. Sometimes the jumping pit of the sports facilities is simply used as a sandpit.

At the very end of the sports field, a short walk takes you to the last playground in the row. There is the largest sandbox on the site, beautifully situated in the shade, spring seesaws, another play hut with a slide, swings and even a trampoline.

    banner_busses

    School Buses

The German School Nairobi offers school bus transport for school children and kindergarten children.

Children under three years of age (playgroup) are only allowed to ride the bus when accompanied by an adult.

The children are picked up at their place of residence (in front of the respective property) and then dropped off again. The parents are responsible for safety up to the point of boarding the bus, even if the bus waits until the children have passed through the gate.

Registration for the School Bus Transport

The registration for the school bus transport as well as for the AGs and lunch takes place for the entire school (kindergarten, elementary school and secondary school) at the beginning of each new school semester via a bundled online registration. The registration form can be found here.

The link for the online registration will be communicated to the parents by email within the first school week of the new school semester. There is an option to register for round trip or one way only. Transportation will be charged for this option.

If you have any questions regarding registration, re-registration (in case of change of address) or deregistration of your child/children during the current school term, please contact our secretary by email - night.kagoni@germanschool.co.ke.

    School Bus Transport Costs

The buses go to all areas around the school. The bus network is divided into three zones, which you can see here .

The fees for school bus transport for the current school year can be found here in the section "school fees".

    Daily Transport Tickets

If required, you can also register your child for school bus transportation on a daily basis. You can choose between single trips (outward or return) and round trips (outward and return). You can find the current prices on the booking form here.

Applications can be submitted for one calendar week at a time. Bookings must be received at least 24 hours prior to the scheduled time. If you have any questions, please contact Elkana Njuguna (contact below).

Children who are firmly registered for the tours have priority. For children with individual tickets, no guarantee can be given that there will be space on the buses. In the rare cases where space is not available, parents will be notified accordingly.

The pick-up times for children in the morning depend on the number of registrations and bus routes and will be communicated to the parents in each case. These times must be adhered to, as bus drivers are encouraged not to wait for children in order to be at school in time for the start of classes. Afternoon departure times from school are as follows:

    elkana

    (Mo - Thu) 1.30 pm, 3.30 pm, 5.00 pm
    (Fr ) 1.15 pm

If children who are firmly registered do not need transport due to illness or other reasons, please inform the Head of Transport as soon as possible.

    Library rules / registration

The students of the DSN are provided with library passes and the library usage regulations to prepare them as best possible to use large city of university libraries later in life.

Registering to use the school library is necessary to participate in obligatory teaching units like reading the class reading list in German and English lessons and researching topics.

We therefore ask you to read the attached rules of use together with your children and to fill out the registration form for students.

We also invite you as a parent to loan books for yourself or your nursery children from our library. To do this, please also fill out the registration form for parents.
