DSN on the Big Stage

Dear School Community,

573 entries, 306 schools, over 33,000 students – and the 8th grade of the German School Nairobi was awarded 3rd place in category 3!!! This makes us the only German school abroad among the winners of the 20th anniversary round of the school competition on development policy. Here is the three-minute award-winning film:

A delegation from the 8th grade took part in the award ceremony in Berlin on Tuesday, June 18. Federal President and patron Frank-Walter Steinmeier was delighted: “The great aspect of the entries in this round of the competition is that they not only raise awareness of the fact that we urgently need to do something, but above all they show us what we can do.” Development Minister Svenja Schulze was also impressed: “What I have seen today is sustainability in action, across different types of schools, age groups and regions. The children and young people are taking their future into their own hands, and that’s a great achievement.” Both presented the award-winning check and certificate at the historic Stadtbad Oderberger Straße. “An event like this is encouraging. Seeing so many committed young people in one place is a special and important sign that education for sustainable development is becoming ever stronger and must continue to be promoted – through competitions like this,” said TV presenter Ralph Caspers, who hosted the award ceremony.

While Minah, Sam, Liya and Alfonso represented Class 8 in Berlin, the rest of the class followed the award ceremony via livestream. Daniel Günther, Head of German Development Cooperation at the German Embassy in Nairobi, congratulated the entire class in the conference room together with Mr. Isenbeck.

After the success of this year’s round, there can really only be one goal: To win the school prize in the next round, which will take place in two years’ time.
