The DSN Goes Solar – A Milestone in Sustainability

On Friday, 20 September 2024 – Deutsche Schule Nairobi celebrated a major step forward in sustainability by officially transitioning to solar energy. On the occasion of World Cleanup Day and World Children’s Day, the school marked this achievement by switching to a system that now provides 90% of its electricity from the sun. This transition significantly reduces reliance on the unstable power grid and eliminates the need for noisy, polluting generators.

The school community gathered to celebrate this exciting moment, with speeches, guided tours, and the symbolic “Big Switch” led by the school principal, Jörg Isenbeck, together with the German ambassador to Kenya, Sebastian Groth and the Swiss Ambassador Mirko Giulietti. This change demonstrates the school’s commitment to a greener future, reducing its carbon footprint and paving the way for a more sustainable learning environment.

The switch to solar energy not only reduces the school’s environmental impact but also sets an example for students, staff, and the community about the importance of renewable energy and environmental responsibility.

As part of the celebration, the school was also honored with the prestigious “Exzellente Deutsche Auslandsschule” title for the third time, recognizing its educational excellence.

This remarkable step forward in sustainable energy is just the beginning. The school remains committed to continuous improvement and innovation in both education and environmental responsibility.
