Dear School Community, Last Sunday, Nairobi came alive with the rhythmic pounding of 22,000 runners’ feet, a congregation that included many passionate members of our school community. This remarkable occasion marked the 20th edition of the Nairobi Marathon, a sporting spectacle that has been flourishing since its inception in 2003, now standing as Kenya’s grandest sporting event. The marathon’s route wove its way along the Southern Bypass, offering runners a unique opportunity to catch glimpses of wildlife within the national park. As a sustainable gesture, all participants who crossed the finish line not only received their medals but also carried home small saplings. Over the years, this marathon has contributed to the planting of over 20,000 trees, and we hold the hope that these trees will one day provide shade along the Southern Bypass for future runners. Alphonce Kigen (2:10:18) and Evaline Chirchir (2:24:31) emerged as the champions of the marathon, which no one from the DSN had the confidence to run this year. In the half marathon, we couldn’t outpace Justus Kiprop (1:02:39) and Jackline Chelal (1:11:18). Nevertheless, we applaud the remarkable achievement of Luca (grade 12), who completed his inaugural half marathon in 2:29:04. Equally commendable is the feat of young Finn, a fourth-grader, who also conquered the challenging 21 kilometers. Congratulations to all the runners who joined in the celebratory ‘birthday run’!” |
