Student participation in dialog – SV regional meeting of the German schools in Addis Ababa, Pretoria and Nairobi

With financial support from the ZfA, a regional meeting of student representatives took place in Kenya from February 7 to 10, 24. SV members from the German Embassy School Addis Ababa, the German School Pretoria, and the German School Nairobi spent three days working together on important topics of student participation, comparing SV statutes and discussing the role of SV work for democratic education in schools together with the principal of the DSN. All participants were able to stay in the former boarding house of the DS Nairobi together with the supervising teachers so that the exchange could continue beyond the official program and close contacts were made.

Other topics discussed included the promotion of environmental initiatives at German schools, the organization of cultural events, and ideas to promote the mental health of the student body.

During a visit to the headquarters of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) in Nairobi, issues relating to sustainability, environmental protection, and partnership were discussed in a broader context.

At the end of the regional student council meeting, the students formulated concrete measures and projects that they wanted to introduce in their schools and planted two trees together on the grounds of DS Nairobi as a symbol of a sustainable partnership. They agreed to stay in contact, continue the cooperation between the schools, and pursue the common goals – now also as newly found friends.

Before leaving, there was still time for a visit to the world’s only national park in the capital city, the Nairobi National Park.

The student representatives from Addis Ababa, Pretoria, and Nairobi would like to thank their liaison teachers for their commitment and especially the ZfA for supporting this unique meeting!
