Warrior Writing

Dear School Community,

Year 7 are reading the novel ‘Warrior Boy’ by Virginia Clay as part of the English curriculum. Throughout the book, the students follow the main character Ben, a British-Kenyan student, on his journey into his Maasai family. In the course of the book, Ben not only gets to know the Maasai culture but also himself better.

In joint projects, the pupils were able to create texts, videos, drawings and a podcast to trace Ben’s character and his development.

However, the highlight of this series of lessons was meeting the author, Virginia Clay, in person, asking her all kinds of questions about the book, and benefiting from her experience in creative writing in a writers’ workshop.

The students learnt how to develop characters, create suspense and captivate the reader with precise descriptions based on their own experiences.

Virginia Clay, who repeatedly motivated the students to structure, edit and improve their texts, finally surprised the class with a reading from the sequel to the book and her plans to turn Part 1 into a film series
