Last Tuesday, our class 3s paid a visit to the Gigiri fire station. It was a fun way to experience some practical reality concerning our current science theme – fire. The children were able to ask and find out firsthand what firefighting is like in Nairobi.
Some interesting things they found out were: that the firesuits they wear are fire and water-resistant and that there’s not much to do at the fire station when they are not out putting out fires or helping at car accident scenes. Of the 3 fire trucks they currently have only 1 is fully functional but luckily all Nairobi fire stations pull together to help each other in times of need.

We also found out that the emergency numbers to call in Nairobi are: 0202344599 and 020222181. This hotline sends the nearest fire station to help. Finally, The children were allowed to use a fire extinguisher which seemed to have been the highlight of the trip.
We all got a newfound respect for these kind and conscientious people who mentioned how proud they were of what they do – saving lives and property.
We hope to have other chances to visit other cool places of work and meet even more inspiring people.
